Dr. Douglas W. Fain is a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon at Johnson County Oral Surgery and Dental Implant Center in Lenexa, Kansas. He has practiced oral and maxillofacial surgery in the Kansas City area since 1991 and holds both Doctor of Dental Surgery and Doctor of Medicine degrees.

Education and Surgical Training

A native of Texas, Dr. Fain graduated cum laude from the University of Texas at Austin. He then earned his dental degree from Baylor College of Dentistry, now part of the Texas A&M University College of Dentistry, in Dallas.

Dr. Fain completed the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Program at the UMKC School of Dentistry and Truman Medical Center, now University Health, where he earned his specialty certificate in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and completed additional general surgery training through Baylor-affiliated hospitals.

Board Certification and Professional Recognition

Dr. Fain is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS) and has served on its Oral Certifying Examination Committee.

He was elected a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, earning the FACS distinction, and has served as a Kansas Councilor. He was also elected a Fellow of the American College of Dentists.

Outside the Office

Dr. Fain has lived in the Kansas City area since 1981. He and his wife, Chris, have three daughters. Outside of oral surgery, he enjoys traveling with Chris, spending time with his family, and supporting the work of AAOMS and the oral and maxillofacial surgery specialty.

Leadership on the AAOMS Board of Trustees

Dr. Douglas Fain serving with the AAOMS Board of Trustees

The AAOMS Board of Trustees is composed of oral and maxillofacial surgeons elected by their peers to lead the national organization. The Board includes representatives from six trustee districts and officers elected by delegates representing AAOMS state component societies.

Dr. Fain served on the AAOMS Board for eight years, including four years as District V Trustee and one year as national president. After completing his presidential term, he served as Immediate Past President during the 2017–18 term. His work with AAOMS has supported patient safety, professional education, and the continued advancement of oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation

The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation (OMSF) is a nonprofit organization that supports research and education intended to advance oral and maxillofacial surgery and improve patient care.

Dr. Fain has served as District V Chair and as a member of the OMS Foundation Board of Directors. Through this work, he has helped support research projects, education, and opportunities for young faculty members contributing to the future of the specialty.
